You may wish to remember that there's usually no "undelete" for a NAS device, whereas the USB disks will have the standard (though limited

) Windows undelete.
Also: A NAS device will be available to everyone on your network (with the permissions you'll have set-up) whereas a USB drive will only be available to you (I'm not sure how well they can be shared).
Personally I wear both
belt and braces (suspenders)... My photos are on my "main" computer, backed-up onto DVDs and I also have copies on a USB drive (160Gb £40 ~USD 80, bought around 2 months ago which I only mention as prices keep dropping) .
