Disclaimer: I often travel where there are few or no ATMs (Iran, Syria, Yemen, Armenia, Congo etc)... and am even more cautious after I was in Kuwait trying to check out of a hotel when all the ATMS and credit card network in the country went down.
I usually travel with about 800 EUR, 1000 USD, 500 CHF and a couple hundred USD equivalent in the local currency. I also keep a mix of Middle Eastern currencies as I often travel there. I currently have about 100 USD equivalent in Omani, Jordanian and UAE currencies.
When I spent 3 months overland in Central Asia, Iran and the Caucasus, I carried about USD 3000 in various currencies.
I try to use the ATMs and credit cards and keep cash for when that is not an option.
