A cautionary tale...
In general, I would agree that HKG is a fairly easy transit point.... however, I would like to point out one near mis-connect I experienced recently.
I was in F on CX889 from YVR to HKG, arriving at 7:50, connecting to CX723 in J to KUL, departing at 8:55. We arrived on time, and I was one of the first off the plane. I was directed to the nearest security checkpoint (which one must pass through prior to passing through to the departures level). Unfortunately, there were easily over 100 people in the queue, and the line moved very, very slowly. As time passed and my connection grew tighter, my entreaties to the security folks to cut to the front were met with the best of Hong Kong surliness... there were no CX personnel around to help manage the situation.
By the time I got through security and back to the departure level, I literally had to sprint to the gate, and got there just in time to hear the gate agents paging me. One of the FA's (who recognized my name) was helping them scan the gate area for me.... and I arrived just in time.
If I hadn't been on F on the inbound (which allowed me to be first off the plane), I would definitely have missed my flight even with a 1:05 on-time connection.
