AFAIK, Freedom Awards cannot be converted back to standard awards.

As for the OP question, I concur that Standard Award availability has been opening up as late as the day of travel, at least on my primary city pairs. Over the past 3-4 weeks, some standard award availability for Friday afternoon/evening LAX-LAS flights has occurred even on the day of travel. Free last minute travel to Vegas from LAX on a Friday night?? Kind of tells you how really weak the economy is, IMO.
