Not sure where you are from, but serving pre-takeoff drinks, including wine, in plastic cups is pretty common on all of the US carriers that I have flown. Most serve in-flight drinks in real glass, although US Air went full plastic for a while (for domestic flights), I am not sure if they have brought back glassware or not. I just flew Airtran for the first time since the Valu-jet days, and they have no glassware in biz class, and use the single serve bottles of wine in both coach and biz. I don't think glass would have helped.
I live in London. I don't do a lot of internal US flights, although I have done two in the past two or three weeks. Both were early-morning flights, however, so wine was not really an issue.
