The comp upgrades are valid for a one class, one sector upgrade. So AKL-LAX is one sector. So Y > Y+ (and Y+ > BP) on that flight is one comp upgrade voucher and Y > BP is two upgrade vouchers. AKL-LHR is two sectors, therefore you need two upgrade vouchers just to upgrade a AKL-LHR one way in a single class upgrade.




I was under the impression that only Gold Elites could gift upgrades?
If you are lucky enough to find confirmed upgrade availability on AKL-LHR, you can do Y->BP confirmed with 2 certs... but this only works with comfirmed upgrades. Standby upgrades require 2 certs per sector.

AFAIK only Gold Elites can gift the upgrade certificates, but Golds can gift upgrades with A$.
