In the US, there is usually a "flat tire rule", which allows you to come a little late, and still get accommodated without paying any fees. I'm not sure if this would work outside the US, though. I've always found that NW employees were very helpful. If the frontline employee wasn't being helpful, I'd call the US NW number, or perhaps Singapore.
