Just cancel the card after the trip. If you keep it another 2 months that's just shy of 80 bucks (if you are breaking down the fee in terms of months). Find out if it's a better value to pay the 80 bucks for the FHR benefit or cancel now and deal without it. It may be a gamble, I know, as room upgrades are not guaranteed; but that's the only way around it that I know.

BTW, I am also pissed at Amex about the 2 for 1 domestic program. If I can get a job off the road, mine will be downgraded back to the MR+ Gold. I keep it now only for the lounge benefit.
