dropped USB mem stick, now it's a shadow of its former self, any way to rescue?

hi all, just a quick question, which I have a feeling is unsalvageable, but maybe you can comment --

I have a USB memory stick, just a little larger than the USB port itself again in size (it was sort of a gimmicky thing combined in a laser pointer, detachable). It was 1GB. And it has all of the circuits exposed because I took the outer case off...

I left it on the floor in my room, maybe it was dropped once or something, and overnight it became unreadable on plugging into my laptop. It asks to be formatted, and not only that, it thinks it's 8MB now.

any hope? or is it dead? nothing too important on there, but I was surprised it was so non-durable.

thanks!
