One thing I don't understand is why you had to think long and hard about posting this here. If the facts are as you've stated, then it seems an eminently reasonable thing to post. I don't know that I would have handled it onsite the way you did but can understand that after midnight you perhaps don't function the way you would normally.

In the 4 days that you were there did you try and resolve this with the hotel manager or their reservations manager?
