Mr Travel Manager answers: "No, that will not be OK, you must book WT+ and pay more because it might set a precedent and people will always expect to fly in J or a senior manager may see you in J and complain or some other stupid such excuse they can come up with because they are thick as two short planks"

Idiots!!!
There is a solution.

All WTP fares ex UK are changeable, which includes being upgradeable, for a nominal fee. So all the employee needs to do is book a WTP fare by calling on the phone. Then once the ticket has been issued print out the e-ticket receipt for WTP.

At no point have you altered the travel documents you submit to your employer so you can submit this for your expenses. After the next step you will be travelling on the same PNR.

Once you have the printed copy of the receipt call BA and ask to upgrade to I class. All you will have to do is pay the change fee and the difference between T and I will be lost.

Then if a senior manager does see you in J or if the company find out you can say that you paid your own money for the upgrade, which is absolutely true as you stumped up the GBP 50 change fee. And surely it would be illegal for a company to discipline an employee for using his or her own money to upgrade a flight?
