As our friend UnitedSkies has explained, yes, indeed! I thought that was a fairly standard industry practice, isn't it?

I personally lost 790 miles in Oct 02 taking UA 837 "direct" IAD-SFO-NRT that I was unable to book online any other way. (And then I never got my 1000 mile online booking bonus, despite promises from the 1P desk.)

That's just one more trick one has to be mindful of. Don't get fooled again!
