The menus I've had on my SFO<->NRT flights always say "We apologize if the Obento meal is not available and suggest that you pre-order it 24 hours in advance of your next flight to/from Japan"

Good advice. IME, they seem to go quicker on the SFO->NRT leg than the reverse.
