Not all 3G phones work in Japan; you need to make sure that your 3G phone works on the UTMS 2100 MHz frequency. Check your phone specs or call your provider. There is one more 3G frequency that works in Japan, it's au's CDMA2000 x1 frequency, but I don't know it off the top of my head.
