I have a Travelpro 22" with a suit bag that fits in the zipped comparment on the top of the bag. This requires folding the suit twice, but my suits always come out wrinkle free. I can't imagine traveling any other way.

As others have noted, you can carry on a plastic suit bag which will lay flat in the overhead bin, but I find it more cumbersome to lug it through the airport.
