I know I should know better, but what is the most efficient way to do this to get more miles and a decent price. Even though I have been around for a while usually I have wanted the non-stops

Are there better web-sites for this?

I do have access to ExpertFlyer.
I'm not as familiar with AA, but for Continental, the trick is to pick a close airport that isn't a hub, which then forces alternate routing. For example, I fly EWR-SFO often, but that's a direct route. If I choose PHL-SMF, it routes
through IAH, and mileage is raised even higher.

As for your flight, I see it giving you 1666 O/W miles direct, or ~2140 miles through DTW or LAX.

Trying to do what you are doing (pick the routing) might cost significantly more.
