Actually Lufthansa does not allow American car seats. I live near Frankfurt and fly them all the time and once mine was taken away. I had the purser brought over and everything. It just turns out that the German Flight Attendants don't usually check but it was my luck that we happened to get a fellow Frenchman (working for LH, living near us) checking it.

My son became a LH FTL before he was 2 years old, always using his American car seat. We flew several times from FRA or MUC to SFO, LAX and GRU, and also intra-European and German domestic.
Before I even bought the American (FAA-approved) car seat, I called LH in Germany to ask whether they allowed such car seats. I was told they did recognize FAA standards, therefore I should be fine with the American one. That was in 2004.
