I think that many Western goverments are using the publics fear of acts of terror in order to push thru changes that most of us couldn't have imagined 10 years ago. I saw the first episode of a brittish show called "The Last Enemy" the other day, and it really paints a nasty picture of the society Orwell feared. It is available to buy as a miniseries on Itunes Store (

Even here in Sweden, the powers that be managed to introduce a new law that gives mandate to intercept and log all Internet communication that passes our borders.
I find it interesting that England, find such a increased need for improved security measures now, seeing that bombings are less common now than a decade or so ago.
I am a law abiding citizen and I really see these kinds of changes as a defeat for western civilization. You can't prevent all acts of terrorism and crime, and the publics need and right for privacy outweighs the reasons given for the changes, in my opinion.
The hassle imposed on us travelers and more importantly the rights we have to give up, "to fight the big fight", is unacceptable.
