You may well be right - I suppose it depends on the airline's terms and conditions. I know BA, for instance, are entitled to give an involuntary fare refund if they cancel the flight.

Which is a somewhat odd result: if they cancel the flight, you get nothing under your contract; if they delay it, you can claim your actual loss up to about £3,500 under the various conventions.
