Some airlines will actually give you a credit for the difference, some will but minus a change fee that pretty much negates the credit.

Even for those that don't, the good news is that if the fare goes up, you are locked in at what you paid, and more often than not, the fare does go up as time passes, so most of the time, you are still ahead.
