I have been successful in this. I have been holding a reg Plat card for years. When they cut the AP conversion rate to 1.25 from 1.5, I canceled the Plat card and got an AP Plat card. A few months later, I discovered that I could get a Plat card for free. So I got one.

Then I read FT and found out that I could be just paying for a Plat card and get an AP plat for free. There's about $100 a year difference in membership fee. So I called them again. They refused to give me the switch. I threatened to cancel the cards. They panicked, because my monthly billing is >$40K. So I got what I want. They charge me for the reg Plat card and give me the AP Plat for free.^
