Not that I'm complaining...I've just already done that routing before.
The only options they can book are ones that will automatically show up online (which mirrors what comes up in their reservation system).

I think you can book ATL-NOL-LAX directly on the days the Sunset Limited runs (thrice weekly; don't know the specific days offhand).

But most of us view the route through WAS as the chance to see more of the country (and enjoy the train trip and more free food in the diner!).

As indicated above, too, make sure to book the award reservation for two people (you and your brother) so you are both on the same itinerary--no extra cost or points required (and he doesn't have to pay a coach fare)!
