Incognism got it right . I was talking about a situation in which I would be booking the award, checking in, and checking out - all on the same day. Something like booking an award at 00:15 on October 14th with the goal of checking in at 1 am on the 14th and checking out at 11 am (still on the 14th).
I've actually tried to make such a reservation once which ended up being a bit of hassle . The SPG agent told me to make the reservation directly with the hotel. The hotel was able to make the reservation, but as I found out later, the night shift didn't setup the reservation correctly and the hotel charged my card for the night that I stayed there and booked the award stay for the next night. Once I saw the saw the charge on my card, an email to the hotel's GM sorted everything out .
Anyway, is there any way to make such last minute award reservations through SPG? Or is it only possible to make them directly with the hotel? Is there a particular profile I could mention to the hotel's reservation agent which would explain how to setup such a reservation?

Perhaps the OP can clarify, but that is how I read it.
My guess is that the hotel should be able to do it directly as long as they haven't rolled the system onto the next day yet.
