Taxi is the way to go. You can get baht from the ATMs just outside customs and catch a taxi at the stand on the same level as customs (avoid all the people trying to convince you to take a private car that mob you outside customs). Cost to downtown should be 300-400 baht plus you pay tolls of about 50-60 baht.
