i did it in india (LM mumbai) after i got bumped off a flight at 1am. It was a lot of hassle, back and forth between SPG and the hotel for at least 30 min. In the end, they were able to do it. it was definitely done manually by the hotel. they just checked me in and then sorted the points the next day. what i think they actually did is make a reservation for the following day. fortunately, availability was wide open, but may be a problem if availability is tight or you get uncooperative manager. I was Plat, and that helped as well and BOM airport hotels probably get this fairly regularly due to late-night flight departures. YMMV
