Has anyone tried booking an award night with points after midnight on the night of arrival?

Seems to be impossible to do online and according to the SPG agent I spoke with on the phone, rooms can only be booked directly with the hotel after midnight - not through the main reservation system. He wasn't sure whether the hotel would be able to handle an award reservation after midnight however.
