It sounds like what you are trying to do is well described in this FAQ post. While not explicitly stated there, I believe that the TCV that is issued is valid for one year from that date. Based on this I would wait until closer to the actual expiration to make the change and have the TCV issued as you do not have any future travel on the horizon that you'll want to use it for in the short term.
