Sadly the only real way to determine upgrade availability is to pick up the phone and call.
When researching the last two trips, united.com showed zilch availability. However, once I phoned there were loads of options.
It's a shame that they cannot show this availability, as it would save hassling the agent. But I guess maybe they feel that once you're on the phone and speaking with the agent, you're probably more likely to book then and there rather than just hang up without a sale?
