Be firm and confident with Aeroplan. You did nothing wrong - you are not required to have a paper copy of your e-ticket (if they gave you paper tickets, different story - that paper is like cash). Politely insist that Aeroplan immediately refund whatever amount you had to pay to Shanghai Airlines.
You will eventually get a refund from either aeroplan or Shanghai Airlines.
