It appears they also offered you travel the next day, which you claim dosn't work because they won't pay for the overnight. You have rapidly boxed yourself into an unwinnable situation. There are lots of potential lessons here, but the Orbitz-bought, AC-coded, UA-operated, US-ticketed travel plan was not brilliant.
