When I first began flying frequently and became aware of the perks that were supposedly available to elites, like upgrades, special concierges, exclusive lounges and special recognition, my expectations soared to finally traveling like Prince Charles or having my own private jet that I lend to President Bush when he wants to impress another Head of State.
Now, experience has refined my frame of reference: it still irritates me when UA does not have a representative to expedite their own passengers through lines to make connections; I deal with surly FA's by assuming they are genuinely nice people that are oblivious that they are no longer capable of demonstrating a polite demeanor because their personal lives are in such disarray; and, no matter how long the line, or how crouded the First Class Lounge, or how lackluster the pre-departure beverage service, I never forget how fortunate I am to be in a premium cabin! There are hundreds of passengers in coach that would be thrilled to deal with what annoys us! Instead of contemplating how ridiculous the chaos is at the gate I prefer to breath deeply, paste a smile on my face, and force myself to enjoy the trip!
