I was able to snatch two award tickets ORD-PVG in December at the old mileage rate. My final destination is BKK. I want to purchase that last leg from PVG to BKK on China Eastern or the cheapest/most convenient option. It may or may not be the same arrival/departure terminal. The shorter the connecting time, the better.

My question is about transit rules in PVG (and in China for that case). Has anyone done this? I am aware that US citizens need a tourist visa at $130, also there is a transit visa at the same price $130. But I have no intentions of staying in PVG or leaving the airport. What documents do I need, if any, or what is the procedure?

How will immigration deal with me (factoring in the language barrier)?
Will AA even let me leave ORD and travel to PVG if I show them a continuing ticket to another country and visas to Thailand as necessary?
