No problem getting a seat assigned for a regional J seat. Done it many times in the last few months. Although if it's a 734 then it's hardly worth it as there are no good seats on those things.
But if there's two of you traveling, it's nice to get seats together...

I bought through Expedia and the first leg was SQ metal on the MH codeshare, the second was pure MH. SQ then moved some flights over to MI metal and I suspect there were no J seats left so we got bumped onto the earlier MH flight, but got to retain the SQ code.
