In at least one state, "Deffective Speedometer" is a lesser charge that normal speeding tickets are frequently reduced to. The fine is the same, but less (or no) points on your DL depending on yout state.
I got a "fix it" ticket in Utah for a defective speedometer. Generally, these were tickets that were destroyed upon furnishing proof that the problem was fixed. No points, no problems if fixed.
