and the winner is...

...markxs!

i printed all of the names previously listed, put them into a hat and my boyfriend drew the winner. so markxs, you have a pm asking for your address, to send the sim card i bought.

(obviously if for some reason you don't want it, please let me know and i will re-draw the names...)

thank you again to everyone for all your help and advice. we returned from our cross country trip on sunday (more than 4100 miles, l.a. to nyc), and i can report the following two main points related to your technology advice:
  • the inverter was GENIUS. the. best. purchase. ever. no one in the car (there were 3 of us) could probably have made the trip without it - between ipods and iphones and cell phones and my laptop and camera batteries, it was pretty much constantly in use. and worked like a dream! we often arrived at hotels late at night, and didn't always have the time to unpack and charge things in the room. the inverter was just invaluable.
  • the sprint card i rented from rovair worked pretty well, except for the speed. large chunks of the trip were in more rural areas (utah, colorado, kansas, etc.) and it was MIND NUMBINGLY slow. but it worked, and it helped us immensely - sometimes booking the last room available at the grand canyon online from the hotel's parking lot and then running in with the laptop with confirmation number - things like that. it was easy to set up and did work well enough in cities.

thank you again to everyone for your advice. i've now got a lot more knowledge, a great account complete with discount at rovair, and an inverter for future use.

best regards,
katherine
