If early in the morning the flight connections centre ( FCC- with the airside transfer can be busy) and going landside ( assuming he can enter the UK with no visa problems) may be quicker and the underground tunnel would be quicker.

90mins does not leave a lot of time so he should hurry as soon as he gets off the aircraft.
