I pride myself in being law-abiding too, but if I were in that situation I would chalk it up to "honest mistake", bite the bullet, pay the fine, live on.

It is not necessarily the fine. Some people pride themselves on being law abiding and become really upset if they are accused of breaking any law...even for minor traffic infractions.
