Very important if you book mixed XF/XY itinerary - call and verify that for your XY segments that you are placed on the FFCC waitlist. This is what puts you at the top of the heap (even above upgrading GS) on the day of the flight, as when you are on the FFCC list you are the equivolent of a full fare paying F passenger.
My plan for the return trip is to book any date far out in the future with XY inventory. When my parents are ready to come home, I will start monitoring XF inventory for the next few days. As soon as I find them, I'll call to have the XY reservation change to XF for the date that have seats. That should work without any change fee, right? BTW, it will be all on UA metal.
