My NAS died: what to do now?

It was an Infrant (now Netgear) ReadyNAS NV in RAID 5 configuration. Most of my data is still on the system I was using the NAS to back up, but I'll lose some data from an old, defunct lappy (fortunately nothing critical, or I'd have a data recovery question).

A new ReadyNAS NV+ (bare; I'd have to use my old drives) will run me $1K or slightly less. I was thinking instead of redeploying my G5 tower as a network server/backup device, and getting a new iMac for $1500 or so. With a $80 kit I could stuff 5 drives into the G5 chassis and then run software RAID.

Thoughts? Thank you.
