The surest way to find out is to ask an agent. But my understanding is that you have to both stay within the maximum permitted mileage (MPM, usually 1.2 * the non-stop distance) AND it has to be a published routing. To get a read on the latter, you can see what flights come up in a search on staralliance.com.
