Since I am in the small minority of FTers who use debit cards almost exclusively, I thought that my complete lack of problem experiences was relevant. You obviously feel differently. Also, I was responding directly to a post which said something like "why anyone would use a debit card is beyond me."

In case there aren't here are some facts. Citicards has a special desk set up for people who want to use the card for a very large charge (usually to get the miles) for something like a car, a home downpayment, a tax payment, etc.
The procedure roughly is that they want the money in advance after which they will authorize the charge.
I can't log on to the website now but if I recall correctly, the bill pay screen has four choices, a) total outstanding balance; b) amount on last statement; c) minimum payment due; and d) other amount [fill in the blank].
I'm sure there are ways to do this with manual intervention. But if you try to pay an amount larger than your balance online using "Other amount," you will find that the system will not accept it. I have tried this with a Citibank (albeit non-AAdvantage) credit card and have had my attempt rejected. I seriously doubt that Citibank AAdvantage credit cards use a different payment mechanism.
