I just checked again
SFO-CDG for April 4-12 (Leave on Sat, Returning on Sunday 8 days later)
If you think there will be seats left for the same dates at cheaper fares later, then great.... but they have gone up since I booked mine.

Booking 2 people
Cheapest outbound is 3 segments for $649
I selected 2 segments for $659
Same on the return, except it kep saying the 2 segments choices I was choosing were not available, so I took a $659 3 segment return

Departure Fare per Person 659.00 USD
Return Fare per Person 649.00 USD
Total Fare per Person 1308.00 USD
Additional Taxes and Fees per Person * 131.20 USD
Total Price per Person 1439.20 USD

I paid about $87 on each of the award tickets. so the savings currently is about $1350. It was closed to $1300 when I booked them.

I just checked ORD. The cheapest outbound 1/2 is showing $546 BEFORE Fees and taxes. So. add a return and the taxes and fees, and it's not much cheaper.
The crux of my argument is that its still 6 months away and low fares have not been loaded. If its still that much in January or Feb. I will be surprised. Also its 1055 on AC. On an award ticket miles don't really matter and airline shouldn't either. Flight on AC is just as good as flight on AA if not collecting miles IMO.

My point is that if I offered you $1200 for those tickets you would probably take it. If that is the case then you can not really say those miles were worth $1300.
