If the nice human unit asks "How would you like to upgrade?" answer/question them back, "Could you please take 500 milers?"

If the nice human unit doesn't ask intially and looks like they might be getting ready to print the boarding passes, you might be a bit pro-active and say, "May I use my 500 milers for this upgrade?"
