I don't think the scenario you describe would be considered "point beyond". I think that is like this:

LAX - Sacramento (by way of SFO) = $100, but LAX-SFO is $150. You book all the way to Sac, but get off in SF. I actually did that several years ago on United, the numbers were different, but it did work like that.
