I believe you can also exchange the miles for merchandise vouchers through JAL, which can then be used to purchase (very expensive) items from their catalogue. I got a copy of the catalogue a couple of eyars ago, and it had things like alcohol, noodle bowls, and fruit baskets. It was in Japanese but pretty neasy to understand, but I cannot remember where they ship to. You can probably request a copy of it through the JAL site.
