Here is a little more info...
Due to the poor economic performance of United's flight between San Francisco and Taipei, the company has decided to discontinue its nonstop service in that market. As a result of that action, the company also plans to close its flight attendant domicile at Taipei and reduce ground staff to meet the needs of the operation.
Greg Taylor, senior vice president-Planning, says, "This difficult decision is based on the poor economic performance of our flights between San Francisco and Taipei. The situation recently has been aggravated by weak passenger demand related to the Iraqi War and the SARS outbreak, which caused us to suspend this flight in May. We do, however, remain committed to Taiwan and to meeting our customers' travel needs. As demand for travel between the United States and Taipei returns, we can offer excellent connecting service to our global network in a more efficient way via our hub in Tokyo. To ensure sufficient capacity for our Taipei customers, our current service between Tokyo and Taipei will be upgauged from a Boeing 777 to a Boeing 747-400 effective this September."
