If you mean a TCV (ie from a bump), it can only be used for a fare and the taxes associated with that fare. You would not be able to use it for taxes associated with a reward seat. It cannot be used for upgrade or change fees. The co.com Travel Club funds have the same rules.

I have never seen a true "gift certificate" so I do not know what the T&C would be on that.
