We had no problems finding accessible, uncrowded internet cafes in Venice, Florence, Siena, Bologna, & Rome 3 years ago, while small hotels had little or no capability and access in fancy hotels was expensive.,

I wouldn't bother with the burden, and even with some handy devices, getting on line may not always be easy.
