That's what I've suggested for quite some time.
Have a mock-up of the exit. Anyone seated in the exit row has to demonstrate opening the door. They are called to the podium, told to go do it. If they don't successfully do it within some fairly short time frame they are reseated. The instructions are only given once--part of the test is understanding them.
Oh, yeah. I can just see pax thinking no problem, I can lift 55 pounds. What a source of strain injuries and resultant lawsuits.
As for seniors, I have no problem with them sitting in the exit row seats as long as the seats are leather and they are wearing their Depends.
