Dropping first leg of return flight on UA?

Hi All,

I may be kidding myself but please advise if you anyone is able.

Purchased a United ticket via Travelocity that was MEL-SFO-PDX stop then PDX-LAX-MEL. I have used the SYD-SFO-PDX leg and have the leg back to Australia this weekend (PDX-LAX then out of LAX back to Oz). I really need to be in LA for 24 hours before I fly out so I bought a one way ticket PDX-LAX thinking I could just not show up for my originally booked PDX-LAX leg (yes I know, what a moron).

Of course I have now discovered that if i 'no show' for the PDX-LAX leg, they cancel the whole journey, and don't worry, I believe they will. What I was wondering was...this is such a long shot...if I was to check-in online and print out a boarding pass and then just show up at LAX before my original flight has even left PDX (I.E. before they have off-loaded me) is there any chance in the galaxy that they would just put me on the LAX to Australia leg? If anybody has done this, or tried to do this and failed I'd be happy to hear from you.

Hope this has been amusing to folks if nothing else.

Cheers,
Mark
